Dukas - The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: Written by french composer Paul Dukas in 1896–97 this was by far the most performed and recorded of Dukas's works. It is most famous for its appearance in the Walt Disney 1940 animated film Fantasia in which Mickey Mouse plays the role of the apprentice.
Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 2: Composed between 1787 and 1789 this became an important piece for the young Beethoven as he wanted to prove himself as a great pianist and composer after moving to Vienna. Beethoven himself apparently did not like this piece very much, but audiences did not agree - they felt there was a new sense of drama to this piece that became present in many of Beethoven's later pieces.
Rimsky-Korsakov – Scheherazade: Known as The Arabian Nights, this piece is considered Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular work. The music tells a story:
The Sultan Schariar, convinced that all women are false and faithless, vowed to marry many times only to kill his new wives on the night of the wedding. One of his wives, the Sultana Scheherazade decided to try and stay alive by entertaining the Sultan with fascinating tales for a thousand and one nights. Her plan worked and he postponed her murder every night to hear more, finally falling in love with her.
