Independent evaluation research findings of the Silence the Violence (STV) and Milestones prison intervention programmes delivered by Khulisa are showing success in reducing reconviction events by 23.8% and improving soft outcomes for offenders across the UK. The independent evaluation was commissioned from the UK Cabinet Office under the Rehabilitation Social Action Fund, and was conducted by the Restorative Justice for All Institute (RJ4All).
Simon Fulford, Khulisa CEO said: “We are very impressed by these research findings and delighted that they demonstrate the impact and value of our work. As new justice reforms, such as Transforming Rehabilitation, embed themselves, we feel that this evaluation shows that we have two proven programme models to offer. Similarly, with violence and deaths in prisons at records levels, we hope that we can lend our expertise, our passion and the hard work of our staff and volunteers, to make a real and sustainable difference. We are proud to offer this report to the debate and vision for a more rehabilitative prison system.”
The programmes were delivered to 268 male offenders in HM Prison Forest Bank in Manchester, HMP & YOI Isis and in Wormwood Scrubs both located in London between November 2013 and July 2015. Both programmes were evaluated as a comprehensive social action model.
Professor Dr. Theo Gavrielides, Founder and Director of RJ4All which conducted the research said: “It was a real privilege to work on this project. Both programmes were scrutinised using a combination of qualitative and quantitative tools including a control group of offenders on participant offenders assessing programmes’. Variants stretched from recidivism, wellbeing to general pro-social behaviour”.
The report provides detailed evidence on both programmes including the positive impact that they have on offenders’ wellbeing and overall behaviour. For example, participation to the programme improves participants’ well-being by 11.6% and reduces their aggression tendencies by 3%.
Evaluation findings also evidenced that Khulisa’s innovative programmes work towards a positive, growth-oriented change in life allowing offenders to come to terms with their criminal acts and encourages them to think about making amends.
The findings will be launched at an evening reception on Thursday 29th October, 4:00pm-6:00pm, with a 4:30pm start. The launch is kindly being hosted by a Khulisa Trustee at JLT Specialty Ltd, The St. Botolph Building, 138 Houndsditch, London, EC3A 7AW.
Attendance is free and on a first come basis. For security reasons, RSVP is essential.
