Establishing dog training projects in prisons and YOIs

New project: Bringing dogs into UK prisons

Lemos&Crane are now exploring the possibility of promoting positive projects for prisoners working with assistance and rescue dogs in UK prisons.

Projects to train assistance dogs are widely established in US prisons and other countries. Research on these projects reports enhanced self-esteem for inmates as well as improved prisoner-staff relationships and a more harmonious atmosphere within prisons. Other positive effects of human-animal interaction (HAI) can include: experiencing the impacts of your actions on another; experiencing and expressing positive emotion; learning self-restraint; and making a meaningful contribution to the community.

Lemos&Crane are looking to establish a picture of similar projects taking place in other UK prisons, which would typically be partnerships between prisons and dogs charities, and to develop further ideas for potential collaboration in the future.

If you are from a dogs charity or a dogs and/or animal rescue centre OR you work in, or with, a prison or young offender institution that has experience of, or aspirations to, work in prisons, then we would love to hear from you.
