Durham University students studying with prisoners at HMP Durham

Durham University’s criminology students have the unique opportunity to take one of their modules as an Inside-Out course within HMP Durham. The Inside-Out programme was developed in the US by Lori Pompa in 1997 and brings together college students and serving offenders to explore issues of crime and justice in the hope that they may benefit from studying together.

The programme at HMP Durham is the first of its nature in Europe, and Fiona Measham, Professor of Criminology in the School of Applied Social Sciences (SASS) at Durham University, completed specific training at Macomb correctional facility in Michigan to be able to facilitate the programme. At HMP Durham the programme was launched in September 2014 delivered every Wednesday morning for 10 consecutive weeks. All students passed the module with one of the internal students from the prison gaining the highest mark for one of his papers.

In 2015, HMP Durham was delighted to welcome Lori Pompa, founder of the programme, to the establishment. Lori was visiting from the USA and spent time speaking to three of the internal students about their experience of the programme. The Governor, Tim Allen, has committed to continue to deliver Inside Out in HMP Durham and the preparatory work for the next programme is currently under way. It is scheduled to start in January 2016.

Read more about how the project was planned and put into practice in our examples section.
