Improving access to digital technology for homeless and ex-homeless people

Following the publication of Trends and Friends:Access, use and benefits of digital technology for homeless and ex-homeless people Lemos&Crane have been working with numerous organisations to improve access to digital technology for people experiencing homelessness, or who are vulnerably housed. As one step in this process we have teamed up with Barclays to install WiFi in homelessness shelters and organisations, starting with the Emmaus Community in Salford.

The Barclays team first spent time at the Emmaus community to get a clear idea of their day-to-day working, the experiences and expectations of companions, and the difference that could be made by effective WiFi and support. The outcomes of this discussion include:

Connectivity

Emmaus currently relies on 1 WiFi hub, which is a homehub rather than a business hub, resulting in limited connectivity across the community, with WiFi limited to certain areas and patchy in others.

 Devices

Emmaus are reliant on donated devices, and some of the donated tech simply doesn’t work!

Support/Usage

Using digital services for social media; eBay; benefit applications; budgeting;  would help the companions while making a contribution to life in the centre, but would also be excellent transferrable skills when looking for employment.
